The Rum Runners’ Ball

The Rum Runner’s Ball is an original comedy with music, with a cast of local characters that tells the story of rum running in Mahone Bay in 1930. The community is divided between Tea-Totallers and those that prefer something stronger to drink. You’ll meet Snuffer Pearl, Blockhouse Betty, Blanche Keddy, (head of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union) Glady ‘the Gossip’ and temperance officer Craig Mader.

Snuffer Pearl is a rum runner with a problem. Someone seems to be tipping the new Temperance Officer, Craig Mader, to the location of Snuffer’s favourite hiding spots for kegs of rum. With a shipment of rum due to land and a big party planned, he takes Betty the Bootlegger’s suggestion for a perfect ‘hide’ and becomes the caretaker at the church. He soon encounters complications when a Temperance Rally is scheduled the same evening as the rum is to arrive and the Ball is to take place.

Songs include ‘The Rum Runners Ball’, chronicling the first epic party of Prohibition, ‘Betty the Hoocher’ and her brush with the Law and ‘I Hate the Sea’, dedicated to those who spend the voyage hanging over the lee rail.
